Email privacy

Is it intentional that when a non-member posts a comment on a blog (or a reply to an existing comment) that his email address (and IP address, in fact)gets sent out as part of the email notification to the blog owner and also to the person he is replying to?

This seems a wee bit dodgy, especially given that, when he fills in the comments form, it expressly says that his email address will be kept private.

Is there any way of getting round this without becoming a member?

Thanks

Yes, it is intentional.

It says that it will not be visible to normal users.

Since each blogger is the owner of his/her blog, he/she is responsible for the content published therein. That is why the owner can see all the details.

But it's not just the owner - it's also whoever you reply to.

Thanks

This is simply to make it easier to report spam or offensive comments.

Fair enough - I'll just get interested party to ensure that he uses email address with a wee bit less personal info in next time...

Thankyou :)

Dear Rampage,

With respect, I think that this issue should be taken more seriously. Although visitors leaving comments are expressly told that their email address "will not appear" on the site, it is not made clear that users to whose comments they reply will be able to see their email address.

Yesterday, a blog owner took offence at a reply I had left to a comment of his on Jenniebaby's blog (though my reply was not in itself offensive or a breach of the talk policy). As my email address was made known to him, he took the opportunity to publicly reveal my identity and workplace. Rather a gross breach of etiquette on his part, but I think the fact that my details were passed to him at all really is an unwarranted invasion of privacy on the part of the site. (If it had been his blog I'd posted on, that would have been different, of course.)

It is quite possible that all of the above is explained very clearly in your privacy policy, but the link to the privacy policy currently takes me to a page written entirely in German, so it is difficult to say!

Thank you for your time.
